About Counterbalance Wellbeing

A person centered approach

Counterbalance Wellbeing is led by Paula.

Clinically, I have extensive experience working with children, young people, families, parents, caregivers and supportive care teams in the areas of complex developmental trauma, neglect, disrupted attachment, family systems, and complex behaviours. My skills and interest lie in the treatment of mental health difficulties including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, posttraumatic stress disorder, relationship difficulties, behaviour change, and grief and loss.

My approach as a therapist is integrative and collaborative. I draw upon the areas of interpersonal neurobiology, neurological threshold and the stress response system. I have undertaken substantial additional training in trauma-processing interventions (including Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy -or EMDR), developmental psychiatry, behavioural and relationally based interventions and developmental neuroscience.

With a love of learning, I also have a passion for sharing knowledge and strengthening practice.

  • I have delivered art therapy education and experiential workshops, reflective practice to professional teams, and supported agencies and school teams in their understanding of complex young people.
  • During the pandemic, I extended my professional practice into the teaching field, teaching Master of Art Therapy students about trauma and the Expressive Therapies Continuum (an art psychotherapeutic model of creative functioning).
  • I have co-facilitated therapeutic foster care training to support caregivers to provide wraparound therapeutic care to children.
